2026 Updates to Washington State Minimum Wage: What You Need to Know
As of January 1, 2026, Washington State’s minimum wage increased to $17.13 per hour.
Employers across the state are required to pay at least $17.13 per hour to most agricultural and non-agricultural employees. The minimum wage applies to all hours worked as defined by state law, including time spent:
- Opening or closing a business
- Attending required meetings
- Participating in mandatory trainings
Check Local Minimum Wage Requirements
In addition to the statewide minimum wage, some cities and counties in Washington have adopted higher local minimum wage rates and additional labor standards. Employers should verify whether local requirements apply to their business to ensure full compliance. Visit Local Minimum Wage Rates for information about minimum wage rates in local jurisdictions.
How Washington Sets the Minimum Wage
Each year, the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) adjusts the minimum wage based on the federal Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The updated rate is announced around September 30th and takes effect the following January 1st.
Tips and Service Charges
Under Washington’s Minimum Wage Act, employers must pay all tips and service charges directly to employees. Tips and service charges cannot be counted toward the hourly minimum wage or agreed rate of pay.
Required Workplace Posters and Resources
Employers are required to post updated minimum wage notices in the workplace. Official 2026 minimum wage posters are available in English, Spanish, and multiple languages through L&I.
