Independence and Interdependence: Supporting Our Local Economy This July
Monday, June 30, 2025
As we gather with friends and family to celebrate the Fourth of July — a day rooted in the ideals of independence, resilience, and shared purpose — it’s a fitting time to reflect on what those values mean for our local community and economy.
At the Bellingham Regional Chamber of Commerce, we’re proud to represent a broad range of businesses — from the corner shop to our region’s largest employers. Each one plays a vital role in shaping the economic strength and social fabric of Whatcom County.
While this holiday reminds us of the importance of independence, we know our success as a region depends on something equally important: interdependence. Our small businesses rely on local customers and community goodwill. Our larger employers provide family-wage jobs and support the infrastructure that allows those small businesses to thrive. Together, they fuel our economy, support local causes, and help create a place where people want to live, work, and gather. In this modern world, it is hard to have one without the other – and why would we want a community without either.
This July, I encourage you to celebrate more than our nation’s independence — celebrate the businesses that bring life to our neighborhoods and prosperity to our region. Grab takeout from a local restaurant before the Peoples Bank Fourth of July Spectacular fireworks, shop at a neighborhood retailer for your weekend needs, or take a moment to thank one of our major employers for continuing to invest in Whatcom County.
In supporting each other, we reinforce the very spirit that July 4th represents: unity, resilience, and a commitment to building something greater together.
Happy Independence Day — and thank you for being part of a thriving, connected business community.
