Local, State & Federal Government Information
The City of Bellingham’s charter establishes a council-mayor form of government. City management is led by Mayor Kelli Linville. Mayor is elected for a four-year term. Six council members are elected to serve four-year terms, with a seventh council member elected every two years in an at-large capacity.
The Whatcom County government is made up of a council of seven elected members and the county executive. Jack Louws is the current county executive, which is a role similar to that of a mayor’s role to a city.
Washington state government is headed by Governor Jay Inslee. The Whatcom County area is part of two legislative districts, the 40th and 42nd. The county is also part of two congressional districts in electing representatives to the U.S. House of Representatives, the 1st and 2nd Congressional Districts. Contact information for local and state officials are listed below.
Voting
Whatcom County is a “vote-by-mail” county meaning that all voters must send in their ballots via the mail or at designated ballot drop sites. There are no in-person live voting locations, only “vote-by-mail.” Citizens can register to vote online or in person with the Whatcom County Elections Department.
